Coming from a theatrical family, Jack Douglas' entry into show business was as a producer, however, not as a performer. His father was a theatrical producer, and Jack followed in his footsteps at an early age--he produced his first show at 15. Douglas showed no interest in the performing end of the business until one night when one of his actors took ill and, there being no replacement, Douglas put on the character's costume and did it himself. He enjoyed it so much that he soon gave up producing comedies and began performing in them. It wasn't long before he became one of the more recognizable character actors in British films, especially in the "Carry On" series, where he played a variation on his most famous character, a nervous, terrified and perpetually fidgety little man.- Writer

Jack Douglas was married 4 times and 3 of those marriages produced a total of 5 children. His first marriage to Eleanor Thatcher lasted less than a month and produced no children. His second marriage to Merle Dean Crain lasted 11 years before ending in divorce, and produced 2 children, a son, Johnny, and a daughter, Marlene. His third marriage, which lasted 5 years and also ended in divorce, was to singer Marion Hutton and produced a son, photojournalist Peter Hemming. His fourth marriage to performer Reiko Hashimoto lasted nearly 30 years until his death. They had two children together, film composer Robert Douglas and studio technician Timothy Douglas.- Actor

Television travel show pioneer Jack Douglas was born Jonathan Aivez in Iran in 1921 and was of Assyrian ancestry. Almost all TV travel shows ultimately followed the format Douglas created in the 1950's. He was a champion of color television and was insistent on filming in color, even back in 1954 when even color shows were broadcast in black & white. His Keyhole television series broke ground as what he called a "documatic" - a dramatized documentary, that covered diverse subjects like aspiring actors, female judo experts, skydivers in action, a handler of poisonous snakes and a tour of the French Riviera. America! was another Douglas-produced series that lasted for one season in syndication, 1964-65, and was produced and distributed by CBS. Douglas also allegedly retained ownership of his film library, although it is unknown why these master films are unavailable for viewing, with only very poor-quality copies available at various internet sites. Douglas passed away in 1994.- Director
